The Northwest Tennessee Local Food Network (NWTNLFN) is proud to launch the 2026 #Grow Food Challenge, a youth-focused initiative designed to inspire children, teens, and young adults (ages 1–21) to explore gardening, composting, nutrition, and sustainability while having fun and connecting to their local food system.
Running from May 1 through July 1, 2026, with a celebration on July 4th at the Martin Farmers Market, the Grow Food Challenge invites youth across Northwest Tennessee to get their hands in the soil, reduce food waste, and submit their journey through photos and videos.

Participation is free and open to youth ages 1–21 in Benton, Carroll, Crockett, Dyer, Gibson, Henry, Lake, Obion, and Weakley counties.
Participants can:
– Grow edible plants such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, or edible flowers
– Plant seeds in containers, raised beds, or recycled pots
– Start indoor herb gardens or outdoor plots
– Begin composting at home
– Show how you are reducing household food waste
Starting May 1, 2026, participants can also pick up FREE seeds and supplies from 15 local Grow Food Challenge Seed Distribution Partners across the region.

Participants are encouraged to submit their journey by documenting their progress through with a simple photo or collage of photos or a short video taken between May 1 and July 1, 2026. All entries must be submitted by 11:59 PM on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
Prize winners will be selected through a random drawing from all eligible entries. Awards will be distributed as follows: 1st Place – $250, 2nd Place – $100, 3rd Place – $75.
The Grow Food Challenge promotes hands-on learning in nutrition, environmental stewardship, sustainable habits, and teamwork. Gardening helps young people better understand where food comes from and how to reduce waste that builds habits to benefit both their families and the broader community.

Winners will be announced during a live celebration on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Martin Area Farmers Market and via Facebook Live @NWTNLFN.
From sprouts to harvest, every step matters. Whether it’s a leafy green, a blooming herb, or a compost bin in progress, participants are invited to share their story and help grow a stronger, more sustainable local food system.
