What is the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival?
The West Tennessee Strawberry Festival is the state’s largest and longest-running community festival since 1934. In the 1930s, the strawberry was the primary crop of Humboldt (beating cotton!). Around 1934, West Tennessee celebrated the first Strawberry Festival. It was held in Humboldt to promote strawberries that grew in that region, including a parade and baseball games, hot air balloon rides, and contests held in the Humboldt City High School gymnasium. An election was held for the Festival Queen and her court.
According to the Strawberry Festival Tennessee website, a group of dedicated community members work as a team to ensure the Strawberry Festival has a variety of local activities to be enjoyed by all. The 2021 Strawberry Festival is happening NOW! from May 2nd – May 8, 2021.
The festival hosts events like live music, beauty pageants, horse shows, fireworks, recipe contests, carnival, parades with floats and bands, a 5k run, and features local cuisine. We all know that due to the recent pandemic, participants are encouraged to wear masks and keep socially distant, but this does not deter us from the Jr. Floats Parade, a Strawberry Festival classic which will be held this year on Thursday, May 6th.

Comparison of Festival in Africa – the Nigerian Calabar Carnival
Before moving to the states, I was born and raised in Nigeria. The Strawberry Festival reminds me of a festival in Nigeria called the Calabar Carnival, which is also known as Africa’s biggest street party including a variety of activities and concerts. The Strawberry Festival reminds me of the Calabar Carnival because these special events are used to promote regional tourism and offer a wide variety of fun & great memories for all ages.
Attending my first Strawberry Festival gave me great memories. I remember the day I went; I had no idea what the Humboldt Strawberry Festival was or why I should be attending the festival’s parade. Although I didn’t want to go, I decided to follow along reluctantly; however, once I got there, there were so many people sitting and standing on each side of the road. Immediately, I saw a group of children parading the street, and then I saw different bands, and I started filming. The parade was so exciting, and I liked it so much, I stayed until the end of the parade. I learned many things and tried funnel cake for the first time that day. It is a festival that I would like to attend again, and this time I would like to participate even more in the events during the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival happening this year, May 2 – May 8, 2021.
